Now Cheltenham based, Chris Bruce was born [1951] and educated in North Yorkshire. He went on to read Modern Languages at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and then, after periods of travel and residence abroad, he went into corporate life.
However, a growing passion for painting led him to leave corporate employment, and set up his own innovation consultancy, which allowed him to divide his time more equally between business and artistic interests.
Latterly, he has turned to painting full time. Horse racing - an enthusiasm first fostered on undergraduate visits to Newmarket - has become one of his major subjects.
The painterly potential of colour, and the challenge of rendering the kinetic and emotional dynamics of racing have inspired a considerable body of work due to be exhibited at a one man show beginning March 11th.
In his painting, Chris Bruce acknowledges debts to great draughtsmen and colourists such as Manet, Degas, Matisse, and Hockney whilst also being open to the graphic imagery which defines much of contemporary visual experience.
