Derek Menary

Born in Belfast, Derek Menary initially studied under G.G.McCann and then at Belfast College of Art, followed by a Studentship with the Belfast Arts Theatre. From 1964 to 1969 he worked in the professional theatre and BBC Television (London). In 1970 he became a student at Dartington College of Arts, Devon. From 1973 to 1989 Derek worked as a teacher and lecturer as well as continuing to paint.

Derek Menary has exhibited widely, both in the UK and abroad, including London Contemporary Art Fairs from 1990, Art Europa – Geneva, Miami Art Fair – Florida, The Royal Academy, Royal West of England Academy, Bath Contemporary Art Fair and The Royal Ulster Academy. His solo exhibitions include galleries in London, Belfast, Dublin, Bristol, Southampton and Glasgow.

Derek Menary’s work is widely represented in private, state and corporate collections, including The Royal Bank of Scotland, The National Trust, The Arts Council of Ireland, IBM, First Trust Bank of Ireland, Aer Lingus, Reuters News Agency, Hayworth – London and The Tresco Estate. His work has been reviewed extensively in leading magazines and journals including The Arts Review and The Irish Times. He has won several awards and a Painting Bursary in 1979 from West Midlands Arts and an Exhibition Bursary in 1982 from the Arts Council of Great Britain (Eastern Arts).
