Born in 1931, Dennis Westwood completed formal training at Wimbledon School of Art and the Royal College of Art. On leaving the R.C.A. he worked as a figurative sculptor until 1964 when, during a period of artistic self doubt as to his figurative capabilities, he became inspired by the work of Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) and Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), resulting in his exploration of abstract forms and the juxtaposition of polished and patinated finishes to produce the style of work with which we now associate him.
Working exclusively in bronze, Dennis is unusual among sculptors in that he personally finishes all of his pieces. Sculpted in clay and then cast in sections at a local foundry, he undertakes all of the welding, grinding, patinating and polishing in his own studio.
During the course of his career Dennis has taught at the Carlisle College of Art, North Staffordshire Polytechnic and, as an exchange professor, at the Indiana University in the U.S.A.
Westwood bronzes enjoy a large following, being widely collected in the U.K. and overseas, particularly in the U.S.A.
