Born at Tredegar, Monmouthshire in 1934, Peter Nicholas was educated at Ebbw Vale County Grammar School. From 1951-56 he studied sculpture at Cardiff College of Art and then from 1958-61 at the Royal College of Art, London.
He returned to live in Wales in 1962 and was appointed Lecturer in Sculpture & Drawing Studies at Newport Art School in Gwent in 1963, followed by an appointment to Head of Foundation Studies at Newport until 1980 and then Head of the Swansea School Faculty of Art until 1988.
A Founder Member of the Welsh Sculpture Trust and a Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. In 1993 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and also a Member of the Watercolour Society of Wales in 1996. He is the Sculptor Director of Sculpture at Margam and an Associate Lecturer at the University College of Wales, Swansea
