Paul Vanstone is a young sculptor who has already established a reputation for the originality and quality of his work. He studied at Central St. Martins School of Art in London and then went on to develop his work under Glynn Williams at The Royal College of Art graduating with a Masters degree in Fine Art in 1993. Paul Vanstone was awarded the Darwin Prize and The Royal Academy of Art Travel Scholarship, which enabled him to spend a year working in Berlin and Italy. He has also travelled widely in Europe, the Middle East and India discovering and experimenting with different materials to achieve a range on finishes and effects.
Paul Vanstone has evolved a distinctive style to his work in marble and bronze. For him the strength and striations of the medium are utilised to emphasise the features and flow of the subject. He uses the way marble absorbs and reflects light to portray the variations in skin texture and to bring out the power and beauty of the subject. He has evolved his portrayal of the human face over the years and in his most recent work marble and onyx have been thinned to create silhouette shapes which have a powerful beauty and impact.
For five years Paul Vanstone spent some of his time assisting Anish Kapoor, one of the world’s leading sculptors. His growing reputation has led to a number of awards and commissions including the prestigious Henry Moore Prize and the Lord and Lady Carrington Sculpture Garden commission. His work has been exhibited at a number of London and provincial galleries as well as having been shown in many major institutions, including the Tate Modern in London.
